While summer is a time for relaxing, it’s also a time for reflection and we’ve been doing a lot of thinking about Realcity since coming back from our wedding hiatus in June. This publication has always been an experiment — a test of ourselves as editors and a test of what it means to truly explore the realities of city life. Over the years, we’ve learned a great deal about both of those things and come out better for it. Running this site and working with writers from cities all over the country has taught Katie and I more than we could’ve ever imagined. Realcity has been a deeply rewarding labor of love for both of us and one that we’ll never forget. Yet, sometimes you need to know when to call it a day.
After thinking long and hard, then thinking some more, we’ve decided to make next month’s Reality Issue our last. Rather than a sad occasion, we want this to be a cause for celebration. September 27, 2013 will mark the three year anniversary of the day Realcity began and in the three weeks leading up to it we’re going to bring you some of the best work we’ve ever done. We’ll have coverage of the major elections happening in New York and Boston, investigative reporting on a whole new scale, one final installment of The Swoboda Factor, a day in the life of Crosswalk Man and more. Plus, what will undoubtedly be great stories from our teams in Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington D.C., Houston and beyond. It’s going to be a lot of fun and we’re excited to get started.
First, though, we’re heading up to see our families in Maine for a few days before summer ends. While my advice from this week’s Editor’s Note about learning to enjoy the small breaks from reality as their own mini-vacations still holds true, I’m also not one to turn down an actual vacation when the opportunity comes along. Both of our work schedules have lined up to make a quick trip happen and I won’t pretend that a break from New York won’t be welcome. Maine is our favorite place to be in August and I’m sure that the time away from city life will only inspire and invigorate us for the task ahead. Stay tuned for the beginning of the end on September 9th!
