Crosswalk Man in Times Square

Realcity [ree-al-si-tee] is an online magazine that’s been exploring the realities of city life since 2010

City life is a struggle. At every turn, we’re either climbing toward something more, maintaining our current status or escaping from it when we’ve had enough. We endure this process for the opportunities — and there are many — but it’s easy to get lost in the mix. With firsthand accounts from writers in cities all over the country, we know how crazy this life can make you feel. Rather than tell you how to live, Realcity is here to help you find your own way. After all, urban chaos is best enjoyed as a way to mold ourselves into something greater. Let’s join forces and figure it out together.

Staff

Cole RosengrenEditor in Chief

Cole Rosengren (NY)

Cole edits in the morning, moves in the afternoon, caters at night and writes in between.

Katie DinardoManaging Editor

Katie Dinardo (NY)

Also known as the fiancée-in-chief, Katie lives and works in Brooklyn. She is very fond of cats and babies.

Current Contributors

Stephanie AndrewsStephanie Andrews (Chicago)

Stephanie is an East Coast girl living in the Midwest. When she’s not managing two trade publications, she can be found at the stunt gym filming a demo, training and kicking butt. In her spare time, she enjoys circus arts, writing, painting and decorating her apartment. She dreams of having a lyra in her living room and running away with the circus.

Sasha Gallardo-FleenorSasha Gallardo-Fleenor (LA)

Born and raised in LA, Sasha fancies herself an enlightened urbanite with one foot in the out door and the other often in her mouth. After earning her Master’s in philosophy at CSULA and having articles published in a journal of philosophy, Sasha currently works as a freelance writer/editor/blogger for 2Shopper. When she’s not job hunting, writing or brushing up on her interest in Marx and Heidegger, Sasha enjoys talking to her dogs, going to shows, gardening and eating. Lots of eating.

Leah GreensladeLeah Greenslade (NY)

Born in England and raised in Orlando, Leah is a noob to New York. She (somehow) balances school, work, a boyfriend and her passions for filmmaking and writing.

Elisabeth HerschbachElisabeth Herschbach (DC)

Elisabeth is an editor and translator from Washington, D.C. Her translation of the novel Eroica by Greek writer Kosmas Politis was published in 2012.

Arthur KleinbergArthur Kleinberg (NJ)

Arthur was raised in New Jersey and currently lives there again, regrouping resources for another round in New York City. He’s a recent graduate and passionate educator. Above all else, he’s insatiably curious about people, stories and places.

Celeste LittleCeleste Little (NY)

Celeste is a 20-something New Yorker who’s written for Syracuse Woman Magazine, The Jersey Journal, Snax Magazine and TheRoot.com. Her newest project is Ocaelo.com, a website she runs that’s a haven for young artists, writers and thinkers. Celeste is obsessed with Pinkberry, buying a Beagle and reliving the the days when she used to run races — but that might’ve just been a phase.

Caryn LivingstonCaryn Livingston (Houston)

Caryn is an Oklahoma native with a degree in English. She moved to Houston to study law, but decided she wanted to enjoy her life instead. She currently works at a travel agency. On the side, she writes for herself and edits for her husband. She hopes to someday be paid for both of those hobbies. When she isn’t working she’s reading advice columns, watching British TV shows, or snuggling with her Pomeranian, Shadow.

Wendy MahmandWazhma Wendy Mahmand (DC)

Originally from Afghanistan, Wendy has lived most of her life in cosmopolitan D.C. She lives in an antiquated house with far too many stairs, enjoys cuisine from every corner of the world, watches French films whenever she can and spoils her two fancy cats far too much. While she’s always chosen the dependable job over her true passion, which is writing, she’s finally placing the right focus on her literary dreams.

Lauren MaierLauren Maier (DC)

Lauren is a theater technician by day and an aspiring writer by night. Her work has appeared in Geeked Magazine and on their blog. While she thoroughly enjoys her life as a technician, she’s looking forward to moving to England in the fall to attend the University of Hull for her PhD in TV and Film Studies.

Aya MatsumotoAya Matsumoto (DC)

As a recent graduate from Sarah Lawrence College and transplant to Washington D.C., Aya spends far too much time reading stacks of books taller than she is. Which, by the way, at 4’10″ isn’t very hard. When she isn’t doing that or getting into trouble, she can be found fighting with her family via the Internet for control over the Netflix account. By the amount of “Exciting ’90s Cartoons” and “Foreign Buddy Flicks” recommendations, it’s safe to say she’s winning.

Ellen MillerEllen Miller (DC)

Raised in Texas, Ellen found a love for travel and writing while studying at American University. She currently splits time between contracting to pay the bills and writing. Her contract jobs enable her to follow her passion and explore new places. When Ellen isn’t busy applying for jobs, she practices yoga and spends time with friends and family.

Aaron MonteabaroAaron Monteabaro (NY)

Aaron writes, photographs and thinks way too much. The lure of adventure, a love of people and culture and the many variances in the human experience prove ample fodder to keep his fires burning. He adopted the seven-year-bachelor’s degree program ending in NYC but finally found satisfying shelter among the writers and artists who flock to the open roads and the dinner tables. Buon appetito.

Corey PajkaCorey Pajka (NY)

Corey is a Brooklyn-based actor and writer. In his spare time he likes to climb trees in Prospect Park, sleep in and think up clever life stories for people he sees on the subway.

Kate PascucciKate Pascucci (LA)

Kate is a native of Syracuse, N.Y. who is currently living in Los Angeles. She went west after graduating from Cornell University and landing a job in social media marketing for the entertainment industry. She describes herself as a status-update-ghost-writer who can proudly eyeball 140 characters. In her free time, Kate enjoys that she now lives close enough to the ocean to claim that “long walks on the beach” are a favorite activity.

Katie Prisco-BuxbaumKatie Prisco-Buxbaum (Boston)

A native of New York, Katie is a senior studying Political Communication at Emerson College in Boston. In her limited spare time, she can be found tweeting about politics, having feminist rants and quoting Parks and Recreation.

Caroline RitchieCaroline Ritchie (Richmond)

After growing up in South Carolina, and living in Texas, Caroline now calls Richmond, Virginia home. She works as a scientist and is currently trying to wrap up her post-graduate education. Caroline is passionate about nutrition, regularly blogging about her adventures in the kitchen as a Type 1 diabetic vegetarian with celiac disease. When she’s not writing, cooking, or writing about cooking, Caroline enjoys running, playing guitar and making eco-friendly soap.

Morgan RodgersMorgan Rodgers (Houston)

Morgan is a born and raised Texan who lives with her husband on Houston’s west side. She currently works at a travel agency to pay the bills, but prefers writing about simple cooking on her blog, Life from Scratch. In her spare time she can be found attempting yoga or watching reruns of Kitchen Nightmares.

Lucy SamuelLucy Samuel (DC)

Born and raised in the suburbs of D.C., Lucy moved into the city as soon as she could. She works full-time at a bar and part-time as a receptionist. She spends her spare time writing, singing and thinking about how great dogs are.

Eric SamulskiEric Samulski (NY)

Eric is a lifelong New Yorker. In addition to being a teacher, he’s also the co-founder of Rock Against Cancer NY, a benefit concert series, showcasing local NYC musicians. His writing appears regularly on bleacherreport.com and has been published in Filmmaker Magazine,The Gotham Gazette,The MacGuffin and the New Plains Review (all of which can be found on his website: ericsamulski.com).

Ali Shames-DawsonAli Shames-Dawson (NY)

Fancying herself an itinerant philosopher, Ali currently spends her days living and thinking in Brooklyn where she scrapes by as an editor/writer/teacher/yogi. She spends most of her time with words and her cat, Amadeus, who is by all counts a total bad-ass.

Nikki ShewmakerNikki Shewmaker (Chicago)

Nikki is a recent transplant to Chicago. When she’s not writing, she’s out exploring her new city and trying to merge her California sensibilities with those of the Midwest.

Caroline SteurnagelCaroline Steuernagel (Boston)

Caroline is recent graduate from Northeastern University where she received her Bachelor of Arts in English Literature. She continues to work and live in Boston with her little orange cat, watching re-runs of 30 Rock and drinking cheap wine until further notice.

Amy TownsendAmy Townsend (Nashville)

A self-confessed urban gypsy, Amy has lived in Miami, Los Angeles, Chicago and most recently, Nashville. She’s got her eye on Paris in a year or so. In the meantime, she pays the bills penning corporate marketing copy and humorous articles about the job market for her blog What’s Better Than This?. She wouldn’t be a real writer without a half finished novel in the works. Look for it on Amazon at some (unknown) date in the future.

Hundreds of LED-equipped umbrellas will descend on MIT this Sunday night

Residents in the Boston area will have the chance to see a pretty unique art installation this weekend. On Sunday evening, hundreds of LED-enabled umbrellas will light up Cambridge thanks to a collaboration between MIT and a Connecticut-based dance group known as Pilobolus. The event is called UP: The Umbrella Project and was first performed up in Camden, Maine last October. Over 300 members of the MIT student body, faculty, and staff will participate; each gets an umbrella lined with red, green, and blue LED lights plus a controller to let them change the lighting as they see fit, and all of the movements will be broadcast onto a large inflatable screen so that the performers can see their movements.untappedcities:

See a prototype of Detroit’s ten-foot-tall Robocop statue before it’s cast in bronze

In 2011, Twitter user MT suggested to Detroit Mayor Dave Bing that a statue of Robocop would make a “great ambassador” for Detroit. From that seed of an idea, the “Detroit Needs Robocop” project raised over $60,000 through Kickstarter to actually build a life-sized or larger replica of one of the city’s most famous icons. After two years of planning, scanning, and fabrication, the project’s creators have posted pictures of a ten-foot-tall Robocop prototype, ready to be cast in bronze and set up in the city.

Timely as Detroit just announced it’s about to go bankruptbostonianresolution:
